VASILIA CLAYWORKS

Artist's Statement:

"Creating animal or human sculpture and throwing pottery is a continuous curiosity. There are always a multitude of questions to ask as to how it's made, its touch, its shape, its shade, and how it could exist in a home as an object, or a tool. When making pottery, I create pieces that are confident and handsome or whimsical. Sculpture allows for such stylized abstractions and gestures of emotion that the never ending variation are an unending joy to imagine and create. Ideal moments are when a creation surprises me and I wonder what could come next as it leads me down its own path. 

 

The firing process of the large gas kiln is an invigorating experience. After all the variations are considered to prepare a piece for the firing, the kiln then has its own impact that is often a surprise on many pieces and keeps me wanting to do it again. It is magic that happens in the firing. "
